I wouldn’t say I have a need for speed. I would say I have a need for convenience. I want a food processor that does the job, and I worry that one which says it does the job quickly is going to be inconsistent or not process things how I want them for the food I’m making. Now, if I could find one that does what it’s supposed to while working at the speed of light, I certainly would not complain.
Better yet, if it came an awesome price, I would most certainly be on board without a question. The Hamilton Beach 70740 8-Cup Food Processor tries to do just that. It is supposed to be able to cut through the process of chopping, spinning, grating, slicing, etc. in no time flat with all the precision you want. Without breaking the bank.
What For The Wattage
It doesn’t have the most powerful motor on the market, but considering the size of the machine, 450 watts can make a pretty good impact. It’s probably all that’s needed to get through the 8 cups of whatever you toss in, and it should be enough to get through most textures, materials or chopping styles for whatever you want.
The Best Price
This goes beyond being just a good price. This is a great price. Ironically, it costs less than I spend to make most of the foods that require the assistance of a food processor. For the price, it’s not a huge loss if it’s only used occasionally, and it’s not even terrible if it doesn’t last for the rest of my life. It would be great if it did, but an inexpensive item like this one kind of lets you temper your expectations and not be heartbroken if it has some limitations.
Keep It Together
A problem I always have is available under-counter space. I just don’t have a whole lot of room where I can keep big, bulky appliances. I love my kitchen tools, but they do take up a lot of space I could use for other things. A machine that is not only small, but is also made to be wrapped up without a bunch of extra pieces sticking out, is the best idea for me. The top of the 70740 is made to be flipped over and nestled inside the bowl so it takes up much less space when when it’s being stored. I’m a big fan of that idea.
Feed Your Machine To Feed Yourself
If you’re trying to get a lot done in a short amount of time, you’ll be happy to know this machine doesn’t require you to do a lot of prep work to get your food ready. You can actually drop a whole 2 pound block of cheese right into the feeder of this processor, you don’t even have to break it up in advance. I probably would anyway, because I’m sure it would save time and pressure on the motor, but I like the idea of minimal prep work. I imagine it to be like having a dishwasher you really don’t have to pre-wash for.
Where’s There’s Smoke…
There’s a very unhappy me. Now, there’s figurative smoke and there’s literal smoke. Even though this food processor has received amazing reviews overall, I found a sufficient number of reported problems to cause enough of a concern that I do feel a responsibility to mention them.
As with any product, especially small appliances, there is a small percentage of machines which come off the assembly line which either work for a very short period of time or not at all. That’s to be expected. There have also been reports of the motors literally smoking after a few uses. Again, defective motors do happen, and I didn’t see any reports of them actually catching on fire, but this does cause a bit of concern for me.
That said, this processor has won the hearts of tons of people and the percentage of defective units is small (plus it’s nothing the warranty won’t cover), but it is something to keep in mind.
A Bargain Hunter’s Dream
With such a low price, no bargain hunter can pass this one up. The vast majority of user reviews do nothing but sing the praises of this puppy. Yes, there have been some reported problems, but you’d be hard pressed to find any appliance by any manufacturer without some problem units having been reported. Hamilton Beach specializes in small home appliances and their products are usually top notch quality at a reasonable price. If you’re still banking on an inexpensive option that can be a great choice for occasional use, I’d say you’re most certainly in the right place.
